Not long after leaving the shelter we came to the Dover Oak. It's the largest tree on the Appalachian Trail. It makes the oak in our front yard seem like an adolescent.
It was hot. Long walks in open fields don't help.
After crossing this boardwalk , we stopped at a Garden Center that is hiker friendly. That smell isn't fertilizer...it's the hikers in the Gazebo drinking cold sodas and eating Klondike bars.
Rested and cooled off, we pressed on and saw the most amazing thing yet. It appears to be an Amish Rocketship. Pretty cool.
Oh...the clouds have parted for this next field walk. For lunch today we will be serving roasted Onion and Advocado.
Shade and smooth trail....we need this.
Water tasted great. My filter appears to work.
Other than rotting and about to collapse...it is a fine bridge.
Welcome to Connecticut. Here is a downpore and some thunder. Good thing we are holding long aluminum rods.
There were baby frogs everywhere on the rain soaked trail. It was explained to me that the amphibian population is dropping and to watch my step. I'm not sure if it was the mud or the frogs that made this section of trail so soft, but it was welcome relief for my tired feet. The rain also cooled things off nicely.
And temporarily..the sun came out, with lots of humidity and bugs. Weary, hot and tired from a full day of hiking....we then saw.
10 Mile River. We jumped right in...shoes and all. We were already covered in mud and soaked from the thunderstorm....so this was a good way to clean our clothes and cool off.
In her native habitat.
We hiked about another mile and called Karen from the hostel to come get us. Tomorrow is Sunday, and it's always easier to get to church when we are in a hostel. So...after a long, hot, muddy day, we checked in, took a shower, ate some food (Karen makes an excellent Chicken Enchilada), and collapsed in bed. Another hard day on the trail.
Loved seeing all the photos. Helps us travel vicariously with you. That Dover Oak is very special. How old is it? Great way to wash, rinse & dry. Press On!
