Summer 2019- Day 17- Graymoor to Canopus Lake

Date: July 2
Total Miles Today: 13.9
Total Miles this Summer: 205.7
Total Trail Miles: 1006.1

We woke early...left camp before about half of the thru hikers.

We hung out hammocks next to this picnic table, the wood structure on the left is the shower house.  No hot water, but still a luxery.

It was a clear day and by starting early we hoped to beat the heat.

We failed at beating the heat.

We took lots of breaks and made very slow progress. The heat really takes it out of you.

Not a particularly difficult day terrain wise, but the heat made it hard.

At this moment, we broke 1k miles of the AT completed in our section hikes. Later in the day, we crossed the 200 mile mark on this section hike. To celebrate 1k miles hiked, we sat down and ate a freeze dried ice cream sandwich given to us by another hiker for the celebration.

Canopus Lake, our destination. The state park allows AT hikers to camp in the field. Amenities include a full bathroom with shower and a snack bar that, sadly, was closed when we arrived. Pretty good deal for free. Two nights in a row we've had free campsites with showers. I could get use to this.  A shower was just what I needed after that long, hot hike.
